Car finance for sole traders and the self-employed

Self-employed income doesn't fit a payslip template, but UK lenders have plenty of ways to verify it. Here's the paperwork trail that actually works.

There are more than 4 million self-employed workers in the UK, and every one of them has been asked by a mainstream lender for "three months of payslips" they don't have. This is a practical guide to how car finance actually works for sole traders, limited company directors and contractors — including what paperwork lenders want, what they don't, and what genuinely shortens the application.

Why self-employed finance feels harder

Most car finance underwriting systems were originally designed around PAYE income. A payslip is easy to verify against HMRC data; a self-employed income stream is not, so lenders default to more manual checks — which is why the process can feel slower or more paperwork-heavy.

Specialist lenders on our panel are set up specifically to underwrite self-employed applicants and treat variable income as normal, not exceptional.

The paperwork trail lenders actually want

1. SA302 or Tax Year Overview — HMRC's official summary of what you declared in your self-assessment. Free to download from your gov.uk account.

2. Personal or business bank statements — usually the last 3 months for sole traders, sometimes 6 for newer businesses. Statements show real money in and out, which is what affordability underwriting actually cares about.

3. Accountant reference — a one-page letter from a qualified accountant confirming trading history and typical earnings. Not always required, but it noticeably speeds up decisions.

4. Company accounts — for limited company directors, the last 1-2 sets of filed accounts, plus dividend + salary payslips if drawn.

Trading history matters more than income

A £30k/year sole trader with three years of trading history will usually get a better rate than a £60k/year sole trader with 4 months' history. Stability signals lower risk, so lenders reward it.

12+ months of trading opens the widest lender pool; 3-6 months is workable at specialist lenders; less than 3 months usually needs a deposit or a personal guarantee.

Personal vs business car finance

If the car is mostly for personal use, take personal finance. If it's for business use (customer visits, delivery, mixed-use), consider business finance — the interest and mileage may be tax-deductible via your business, subject to your accountant's advice. Business finance also keeps the loan off your personal credit file.

One line to save you time

Have your last three months of business bank statements and your latest SA302 ready before you apply. That single pack usually clears 80% of what underwriters ask for.
