Step 1: Get your credit file working for you
Register on the electoral roll at your current address. It's the single biggest score lift for young drivers with no credit history. If you've had a phone contract or student overdraft, that already gives you a starter file — check your report at Experian/Equifax to see what's there.
Step 2: Work out your real budget
Add up rent, bills, food and existing repayments. Aim to keep car finance under 15% of your net monthly take-home. Remember insurance is likely to be your biggest first-year cost — get 3-4 quotes on the specific car before you commit.
Step 3: Pick a first car with insurance in mind
Insurance groups 1-15 are usually affordable for under-25s. Popular first cars in 2026: Fiesta, Corsa, Polo, Yaris, i20. Avoid modified cars and anything above 1.6L engine at 18-21.
Step 4: Use a soft-search quote
A single soft-search quote through a broker checks 15+ lenders in one go without touching your credit score. Do this before falling in love with a specific car so you know your realistic budget.
Step 5: Pay every month on time
Your first car finance is also your first proper credit account. Twelve consecutive on-time payments materially improves your score and unlocks sharper rates on future refinances or new deals.
